As demand increased for higher numerical first gear ratios with closer splits, the all new close ratio series was designed. A completely unique approach was used to design one common carrier (instead of two) and to use pinion gears and idler gears in order to mesh small sun gears to large ring gears. A new larger diameter billet steel shell was designed to accept the larger diameter, heavy duty ring gears. This larger diameter required “windows” to be machined to allow “park” to function.
